Mung Bean Sprouts

  1. The first thing you need to know is that not all seeds are suitable for home sprouting. If you want to start growing your beans at home, make sure that the ones you buy are sold for home sprouting. Don’t use beans or seeds that are sold for planting, as these may have been treated with pesticides and other substances that are harmful for your health.
  2. Wash the mung beans until the running water comes clean. Mung beans are usually dusty so you need to make sure they’re completely clean before preparing them.
  3. Put the seeds inside a mason jar to fill no more than one-third of it.
  4. Make little holes on the lid of the jar or use a few layers of cheese cloth instead of lid. The water you add to the mung beans to rinse them will need to be drained, so the little holes ensure that you can do this without having to open the jar.
  5. Add lukewarm water in the jar, until you almost fill it. Close the jar and leave it soak overnight.
  6. On the next day, rinse the beans with cold water and thoroughly drain them. Do not add more water to the jar!
  7. Lay the jar on its side and store it somewhere at room temperature. The place where you leave the jar with the beans needs to have limited light.
  8. Keep it at room temperature. Rinse and drain the contents of the jar two to four times a day.
  9. Repeat the rinse and drain process for around three or five days, until the mung beans are fully sprouted.
  10. When the beans are fully sprouted, rinse and drain them well and put them in the fridge. As these beans are completely natural, you need to use them within two or three days, otherwise they will spoil.
